INSPIRATION
HEARTbook vol. 3 Hope for the Homeless is a collaborative mission with the start-up organization, On Your Feet Detroit. This HEARTbook is designed to raise awareness and provide an opportunity for the community to join the mission and donate towards a cause that truly matters. Bringing hope to the homeless has always been a passion in our hearts so when we first met the founders of On Your Feet Detroit, we were blown away by their compassion and desire to help people experiencing homelessness in Detroit. After they shared their
aspirations with us, we realized it was our obligation to collaborate and create this HEARTbook for the purpose of inspiring change in the hearts of our community.
Think back to the last time you were driving and had to stop at the corner next to someone experiencing homelessness. What was your first reaction? Be honest. If you’re like most people, your first instinct is to avoid eye contact and hope they don't notice you. Many people experiencing homelessness simply desire human interaction. Like everyone else, they too have the natural need for community. They want to feel like they are still a part of society, needed and loved. Too often we allow our past interactions with people experiencing homelessness to create false narratives for why individuals are homeless. The theme of this campaign is Can you see me? because we believe if we started to SEE each other as more than our circumstances and take the time to learn who we are and what we’ve gone through, that's when change can happen. We know we don't have all the answers and can’t change homelessness overnight, but what we can do is start treating people experiencing homelessness as humans. Not all of us have the financial resources to help those less fortunate, but what we do have is our story. The challenge we are extending is to really SEE those in need around you. Fight the urge to stay in your comfort zone, venture out and share and listen to the stories of those in need around you.
